Storay-book ending for Launceston City as they edge Ulverstone in WSL Thriller.

Caitlin Storay was the hero for Launceston City as she headed home a Jazmin Gorrie free kick 15 minutes from full time to secure a 3-2 victory in a thrilling Wednesday night WSL encounter at Valley Road.

The win made it three from four for Launceston City, as the early season pace setters moved a game clear atop the PFD Womens Super League table.

In front of an enthusiastic crowd it was Ulverstone who drew first blood when Emily Hernyk deflected a corner into her own net just four minutes into the game.

The lead would not last long however as Jazmin Gorrie answered back in a hurry for City, she made no mistake when played in on goal, delivering a cool, collected finish to tie the score at 1-1.

The furious opening to the game was not yet done, as on 15 minutes the game had its third goal, this time Holly Savill bobbing up at the far post to fire Launceston City into the lead following Naomi Celebre drive across the box.

The rest of the half was less frenetic, although it still remained an open game with both sides very much up for the contest as the game reached halftime with the score still 2-1 Launceston City.

The first 20 minutes of the second half saw no real chances of note but it was Ulverstone on top, monopolizing possession in their opponents half, but failing to do much of note with it.

That all changed on 70 minutes when Phoebe Djakic was played in by a superb through ball from the heart of midfield by Danielle Mitchell and made no mistake, firing home at the near post to tie the scores.

Georgia Foote could have made it 3-2 moments later but blazed over the top from just inside the area.

It would prove a costly miss as two minutes later a teasing Jazmin Gorrie free kick played into the near post was flicked home by Storay to make it 3-2 in Launceston City’s favour. The goal came against the run of play and was a bitter blow for Ulverstone, who had worked so hard to get back on terms only to fall behind so quickly.
The goal seemed to knock the wind out of Ulverstone’s sails and in the process reinvigorate City. They dominated the final 15 minutes and thrice came close to extending their lead. There would be no further addition to the scoring however as Storay’s goal proved the knock out blow and Launceston emerged 3-2 victors.
