About the Club

Noteworthy players and personalities down the years at the club have been; President Mr Frank Buttazoni, who worked hard for a home ground in the early years; Hans Streit who signed in 1962 to become the clubs top goal scorer over the next twenty years and Tommy Strickland, who came within a whisker of winning the Rothmans Gold Medal in 1978. The award was later won by Colin Guest and Peter Savill in 1986.

Player Coach Peter Savill, who won the inaugural Vic Tuting Silver medal and 1980's, coach Ross Wesson who gained entry as a life member with Soccer Federation of Tasmania

History of Launceston City FC

Founded in 1957 by Frank Zelesco and Matteo Stossich during a meeting in Stossich's home at Eardley Street.

The club was first known as Roma until joining the Northern Tasmania Soccer Association in 1958, at which time Stossich and other members decicded on a name change to "Juventus", which translated from it's Italian meaning means Youth.

As far as home grounds are concerned during the clubs early existence moving was frequent, with the club starting off at Coronation Park, before quickly moving to Cypress Street until the ground was sold in 1961. The following years Brooks High School became the new home ground with another move down the road this time to White City. While all along with the constant moving of grounds, the club was one of the only clubs to have access to clubrooms provided by the Australian Italian Club equipped with a bar and a dance hall.

From 1959 to 1962 the club won the Northern Premier League, and in 1960 after winning the Northern Premier League the State Club Title Play-off was held at Mowbray Heights, we suffered a thrashing to Caledonian 1-6. The following year was a different story and was able to bounce back and defeat Rapid and claim our first ever State Championship.

In 1963 the club shifted base to Brooks High School and stayed there for five seasons and won a further four Northern Premier League's.

Come 1966 the club became the first non Hobart side to win the Statewide Ampol Knockout Cup (Statewide Cup).1968 saw the club shift it\'s home ground again to the centre of White City Greyhound Stadium with the trophy cabinet still being filled with a further three northern titles. The club again raised the northern trophy in three successive years from 1975 to 1977 and also won the Ampol Cup (Statewide Cup) in 1976. In this successful 70's era the club was led well by; P. Mies, F. DePaoli, G.Butler, N. Scott, V. Beal, P. Moore, H. Streit, B. Hemsley, T. Strickland, E. Visentin, R. Wesson, M. Morosini and B. Colla to name a few and managed by Aldo De Santi.

In 1978 the club moved to its present home ground at Prospect's Australian Italian Club with floodlit training facilities. The club then spent a great deal on comprehensive floodlights to be up to match standard in 1995.

The club suffered a bit of a drought for 12 years except cup form wasn't missing and picked up the Northern Cup in three successive years from 1985 to 1987.
On an individual note Colin Guest picked up the much acclaimed and the clubs inaugural statewide Rothmans Medal with great hard man Peter Savill making it back to back for the club in taking out the 1987 Rothmans Medal. The 90's weren't great either as only the Statewide Cup and Statewide Cup Reserves were added to the trophy cabinet and a cruel last game of the season loss away to Clarence seen David Craig's men finish runners up to University seeing the State League title further elude the club.

The new millennium saw the demise of the State League and in 2001 Launceston City claimed the Northern Premier League. This period saw our senior women's team reign supreme collecting 5 Premier League titles, and go 3 seasons unbeaten under the guidance of well drilled coach Jason Jones. Reserves were blooded with a new batch of youngsters and bring back the deserted success in the category claiming 3 consecutive championships. But the club would have to wait until 2005 for well renowned Englishman Ken Morton to be appointed coach in 2005 crafting the side to a potential treble winning team taking out the Northern Premier League, and finishing runners up to Glenorchy Knights in the Statewide Cup and State Championship Playoff. 2006 saw the club extend into building modern day clubrooms including a bar facilities and a new canteen.
